SURP PRGITCH ARMENIAN HOSPITAL

Founded in 1832 and opened by Patriarch Isdepanos II. Aghavni Zakaryan on May 31, 1834, Surp Pırgiç Hospital is the largest humanitarian institution of the community. Its founder is Harutyun Amira Bezciyan.

The benefactors of the community, Mikayel Amira Pişmişyan, Garabed Amira Balyan, Hovhannes Amira Dadyan, the Gülbengyans and countless others, kept the institution alive with their huge donations and enriched it with new buildings and additions every year. At first, it was only intended to accommodate mental patients. In 1904, Mikayel Hakobyan planned to build a new one in place of the hospital and for this purpose, the plan prepared by architect Kevork Arslanyan soon (1906) created the current magnificent structure with three sections. These were opened by Patriarch Maghakya Ormanyan, with the names of Hagopyan, Gulbengian and Unciyan, in dedication to their benefactors.

There were no Armenian doctors in the hospital between 1832 and 1848. Perhaps there were no doctors at that time. The institution was managed by Greek and Italian doctors. The first Armenian doctor was Dr. Hagop Bey Hovhannes. It is currently managed by the hospital board of directors.
