The founder of the school was Sister Servuhi Nisan-Kalfayan. The school, which was founded in 1866, served as an orphanage and handicraft school until 1900. From 1900 to 1928, it sheltered the orphan girls and took them in until their marriage. It continued its existence by being converted into a boarding school in 1928.
The school, which was built in Halıcıoğlu, was demolished and expropriated in 1971 due to the opening of the ring roads during the construction of the First Bosphorus Bridge. The school was moved to Üsküdar.
The current school building in Bağlarbaşı serves as a dormitory for Kalfayan students. The Kalfayan school operates with its primary and secondary school sections in the Semerciyan-Cemaran school building in Üsküdar.
