This church was originally called Surp Nışan when it was built. According to Father Küd Ağanyantz, the church was built from the foundations by Shepherd Amira during the reign of Patriarch Zakarya II of Kağızman. It was consecrated and opened for worship by Bishop Hovhannes of Constantinople in 1798. Patriarch Zakarya II covered the construction costs from his own savings. In 1780, a fountain was built near the main entrance by Bedros Amira’s wife.
The church underwent a radical renovation in 1834. At the suggestion of Patriarch Isdepanos II Ağavni and at the request of Harutyun Amira Yerganyan, architect Garabed Amira Balyan undertook the restoration work. The restoration of the church was carried out by Harutyun Amira Yerganyan.
A bell tower was built on the east side of the church in 1858. In 1835, Harutyun Amira Yerganyan built the three-story wooden Tarkmanchats school adjacent to the church.
In 1918, Priest Gomidas founded a choir in his own name here. The church underwent repairs in 1975 and 1988, was consecrated by Patriarch Shynorhk, and opened for worship. The last restoration of the church was carried out in 2007, when it was consecrated by His Holiness Patriarch Mesrob II, and opened for worship.The bodies of Patriarch Zakarya in 1799 and Bishop Nigoğayos Ağasyan, the prefect of the Patriarchate, were buried next to the south wall of the church in 1874.
