“As for me, I will never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him the world is dead to me, and I to the world.” (Gal. 6:14)

SURP TAKAVOR 1

SURP TAKAVOR ARMENIAN CHURCH, KADIKOY

The name of this church was first mentioned in 1722. The church was originally called Surp Asdvadzadzin. During the time of Patriarch Apraham I, thanks to the benefaction of Harutyun Amira Noradungyan, the church was rebuilt and reopened in 1814. After the earthquake of 1840, it underwent restoration. In 1855, when the church was destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt in stone during the time of Patriarch Hagop III, through the generosity of Hacı Garabed Ağa Muradyan from Erzurum. Its reopening in 1858 marked the beginning of its being known as Surp Takavor. In the same year, Hamazasbyan School and Muradyan Girls’ School were established in the church courtyard.

In 1936, with the philanthropy of Hovhannes Noradungyan, the inner courtyard of the church was expanded. In recent years, thanks to the benefaction of Herman Türkmen, the entrance section of the church was covered with a wooden roof and enclosed with glass on three sides.

The church underwent restoration in 2006 and was re-consecrated and reopened for worship by Patriarch Mesrob II. In 2007, the bell tower was rebuilt.

The latest renovation works were completed in 2011, and the church was reopened for worship by the Patriarchal Vicar General, Archbishop Aram Ateşyan. On this occasion, two altars were added to the entrance section of the church, dedicated to Surp Stepanos and Sırpotz Karasnitz Mangantz.

In two separate tombs located in the courtyard rest Garabet Muradyan and his wife Hatun Muradyan, who had contributed with their philanthropy to the rebuilding of the church.
