“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.” (Ps.23:1-2)

Surp Asd ORT 1

SURP ASDVADZADZIN ARMENIAN CHURCH, ORTAKOY

This church was first mentioned as Surp Giragos in 1665. It belonged to Armenians who migrated from Eğin and its village of Abuçeh and settled in Ortaköy. At that time, the church was a chapel, but it was rebuilt in 1725 during the reign of Patriarch Hovhannes IX Golod and named Surp Asdvadzadzin. Its inauguration took place in the Kumkapı Patriarchal Central Church by Archpatriarch Garabed Ulnetzi, who was consecrated Catholicos in 1726.

Later, in 1825, a new stone church was built on the site of the wooden church. A magnificent rose motif was placed in the center of the ceiling, where an elegant chandelier hung. There is a bell tower constructed with iron poles. To the right of the church is the Surp Isdepanos chapel, and to the left is the Surp Yerrortutyun chapel. The construction of the baptismal font was completed in 1824.

After a long and radical renovation process, it was blessed by the Patriarchal Vicar, Archbishop Aram Ateşyan, and reopened for worship in 2012.
