SURP ASDVADZADZIN ARMENIAN CHURCH, HATAY

Hatay Vakıflıköy was formed in the 1800s by the residents of the neighboring villages of Yoğunoluk and Hıdırbey.
In 1895, the villagers united to build a church. Tateos and Movses Ayntabyan, two brothers from the village, donated the land needed for the church and the cemetery. The construction was carried out through the financial contributions and labor of the villagers. The church was consecrated by Father Tateos Yegavyan, the Spiritual Leader of Antioch.

In its early years, the church did not have a permanent clergyman. Until 1921, priests from the nearby villages of Yoğunoluk, Hıdırbey, and Kebusiye took turns visiting Vakıflı. Among them were Father Hovhannes Ipracyan, Father Boghos Küsbekyan, Father Harutyun Şerbetciyan, and Father Madteos Güzelyan. The village’s permanent clergymen were Senior Father Ghevont Kartunyan and Senior Father Serovpe Gülyandı. Both were natives of the village and also served the churches in İskenderun and Kırıkhan.

The present charming church was built in 1997 through the benefaction of Mr. Bedros Şirinoğlu and was consecrated and reopened for worship by Patriarch Karekin II.
